  2. Preface to Plato  (Harvard University Press, 1963), Eric Havelock 
  3. contrasts the oral and written cultures of the Greeks. By 
  4. Plato‚Äôs time the written word had created a new environment 
  5. that had begun to detribalize man. Previously the Greeks had 
  6. grown up by benefit of the process of the tribal encyclopedia . 
  7. They had memorized the poets. The poets provided specific 
  8. operational wisdom for all the contingencies of life‚ÄîAnn 
  9. Landers in verse. With the advent of individual detribalized 
  10. man, a new education was needed. Plato devised such a new 
  11. program for literate men. It was based on the Ideas. With the 
  12. phonetic alphabet, classified wisdom took over from the 
  13. operational wisdom of Homer and Hesiod and the tribal 
  14. encyclopedia. Education by classified data has been the 
  15. Western program ever since.
